II:2 Quenching of steel

This project will build on the results of phase 2 in several ways. The modelling of the surface temperature and convective heat transfer distributions in unidirectional-flow gas quenching for single- and multiple-body quenching will be completed, and linked to a solid mechanics model in order to predict distortions and phase hardness distributions. In addition to this direct approach, an inverse method for coolant gas flow prediction in a number of important quenching problems will be pursued. Also, on the experimental side, current work on the use of thermochromic liquid crystals as a predictive instrument for optimal quenching will be continued.
